On 9 August 2026, Indigenous women from across Kenya gathered in Isiolo County for the 12th Indigenous Women Council Convening, hosted by Samburu Women Trust, under the theme “Honoring Indigenous Midwives: Safeguarding Life and Well-being.”

The convening brought together women from diverse Indigenous communities to reflect on their experiences, celebrate their resilience, share Indigenous knowledge and strengthen collective action for the rights and wellbeing of Indigenous women and girls.

At the close of the convening, the women adopted a powerful Declaration of Indigenous Women, outlining key demands on land and territorial rights, Indigenous knowledge, health, climate justice, women’s leadership, protection of human rights defenders, direct funding and an end to violence and discrimination.

The declaration is a clear call to move from commitments to concrete action, resources, representation and accountability.

“No sustainable future without Indigenous women’s leadership.”
